I’m surprised that the scene being depicted isn’t transcribed, so I’ll do it for ya’ll:
This painting is showing Ivan the Terrible and his son, whom he had just killed after hitting him in the head with his staff after a heated argument. It left Ivan with no successor to his throne and when he died it threw Russia into many years of turmoil. It is a very important piece of Russian history and I think this wonderful painting conveys what Ivan must have been feeling at the time.
